Allegiant to Offer Direct Flight from Tulsa to Orlando

East Tulsa -

Tulsa International Airport officials announced Tuesday that Allegiant is launching a nonstop flight from Tulsa to Orlando.

Orlando is in Tulsa travelers' top 10 destinations. Airlines did not offer this direct service to customers until now. Allegiant is introducing the service with $99 roundtrip tickets.

"The unique part about it is that it really is a low-fare service," said Airport Director Jeff Mulder.

The service will fly MD-80 planes that can hold 166 passengers.

Some airport staff wore "Mickey Mouse ears" in celebration of the news. Orlando is the home of Disney World. As a popular tourist and business destination, the Tulsa Chamber said it will likely increase Tulsans' quality of life. However, it could also open additional doors in terms of business.

"The thing we hear time in and time out is we need more direct flights," said Tulsa Regional Chamber President and CEO Mike Neal.

Airport officials said it is difficult to acquire new airline service and it is even more difficult to maintain it. It is Tulsa International Airport's hope that the airline succeeds and chooses to launch more flights.

An airport spokesperson said Allegiant will contract out workers already employed at Tulsa International Airport to handle the Orlando flight.

When Channel 8 asked a couple at the airport why they had not traveled to Orlando in the past, they said, "The flights are expensive. Yeah, Disney World is expensive." They said they would consider purchasing tickets for the less expensive, direct flight.

The $99 tickets must be purchased by August 22, 2013 for travel by April 29, 2014. $69 one-way tickets must be purchased by August 27, 2013 for travel by April 29, 2014. Tickets went on sale at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Flight service from Tulsa to Orlando will begin October 25th of this year.
