Police Release New Details in Salem Murder-Suicide

Salem, VA - Police have identified the two people who died in a shooting in Salem Thursday.

They say Timmy Hager, 55, and his wife Bonnie Hager, 51, were found shot in their home on Ferrum Drive, which is located in the Homeplace Salem subdivision.

A release by the department says that Mr. Hager shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

Mrs. Hager initially survived the attack, but then died later at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Neighbors say the shooting was a shock and called it "a big loss".

They also say Mr. Hager owned a downtown Roanoke accounting business and the couple had two college-aged sons.

This is at least the third domestic murder-suicide here in the Roanoke Valley this year, a problem which has led Roanoke Councilman Sherman Lea to organize a regional conference on the issue next month.

"To look at the best practices. To deal with this issue... a taboo issue that no one wants to talk about. This is a prime opportunity to do that," said Pastor Sherman Lea, Roanoke City Councilman.

The goal of this conference is to get government representatives, domestic services and abuse victims - from all over the viewing area - together to work on solutions and networks.
