Pittsylvania Co., VA - A family is searching for answers after a 19-year-old man was found dead in his car in Pittsylvania County.

Police found Charles Michael Abbott's body in a car off Chestnut Level Lane in Blairs early Saturday morning.

Police are calling it a death investigation and have not ruled on a cause of death pending an autopsy, but Abbott's family believes someone out there knows what happened.

"He was only nineteen. He hadn't even started living yet, " said Abbott's mother, Beverly Peay, fighting back tears.

She just celebrated her son's high school graduation is now mourning his death. Peay and her family knew something was wrong when no one had heard from Abbott on Saturday.

After hours of searching for him, their worst fears were confirmed.

"I just can't believe it, and I want to know why. I want to know what happened, " she said.

The family says Abbott had been to a party Friday night, where witnesses say an altercation took place.

The events that led to his last moments in that car are unclear, but his mother says the story about her gentle giant of a son just isn't adding up.

"The investigation continues. There are some circumstances that we are really taking an in depth look at, " said Sheriff Mike Taylor.

He says a firearm was recovered at the scene, but Taylor won't say anything more about what may or may not have happened that night.

As they continue their investigation, Peay and her family are pleading to the community for any information that may help them put the pieces together.

"If anybody knows anything, please come forward and let us know. I need to know what happened to my son, " said Peay.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized for Abbott.

If you have any information that may help the investigation, please contact Lt. Corey Webb with the Pittsylvania Co. Sheriff's Office at 434-432-7843.
