Assisted Athlete Teams Ready for 40th Annual Virginia 10 Miler

Lynchburg, VA -  The 40th annual Virginia 10 Miler is now less than a month away, and certain Lynchburg runners are very excited about this year's race because it's the first time assisted athletes can take part in the event.

Mike Mitchell and his son Aaron are excited about this year's Virginia Ten Miler.

"We're going to participate in the 4 miler together, and that's going to be something special for us," said Mike Mitchell.

"It's the best day ever when we race!" said Aaron Mitchell.

It'll be extra special because it's the first time Lynchburg's biggest race is including assisted athletes.

A few teams are signing up to push someone through the hilly course. Team Trinity is one of them. Jerry Price and Susan Anderson will push Trinity Bowling on her wheelchair come race day.

"Quite exciting, and I know Trinity and her family are excited as well," said Anderson.

The teams are part of Lynchburg United Athletics, a group that strives to give those who need physical assistance the chance to take part in local races.

Virginia 10 Miler Race Director Jeff Fedorko says this race has always tried to reflect Lynchburg as a community. And this is just another step forward.

"It's been a great way to reach out to all aspects of the community. The race touches so many people, whether it's the nonprofits we have involved or the dozens of corporate companies and participants that we have participate. So we're real happy," he said.

And everyone else is ready.

"We're excited, we're ready to go, we're in shape, and we're ready to roll," said Mike Mitchell.

Fedorko says they're expecting more than 4,000 entries in total for Saturday's races. If you want to take part, early registration ends Sunday, Sept. 1.
