Danville Crossing Guard Honored for 60 Years of Service at Surprise Party

Danville, VA - Danville's most beloved crossing guard was thrown a surprise party Tuesday in honor of her 60 years of service.

When Melba Tanksley, 91, arrived at her post, she was greeted by the Chief of Police, city officials, family and friends.

Chief Broadfoot presented Tanksley with the Distinguished Service Award and Councilman Buddy Rawley recollected his own experience with Tanksley decades ago as a child in Danville Public Schools.

After being responsible for three generations of children in Danville, Tanksley says reconnecting with her little ones once they become adults is very rewarding.

"To have a car go by and somebody will stop and ask me if I'm not Mrs. Tanksley. To know that they still remember, it's really refreshing. It's wonderful, " Tanksley said.

Tanksley says she has no plans to retire. She described Tuesday's ceremony as humbling.
