Update: Driver Charged in Fiery I-581 Crash Pleads Guilty Friday

Update 4:30 p.m.:

Roanoke, VA - A Roanoke man charged with driving drunk on Interstate 581 and killing two people was found guilty Friday. He faces up to 42 years in prison.

Timothy Wellons was originally charged with multiple variations of involuntary manslaughter. That would have given a jury multiple choices to consider if Wellons had been convicted in his upcoming trial.

Wellons entered a no contest plea to the more serious of the variations: Statutory Aggravated Involuntary Manslaughter.

That charge is an enhanced version of the common law variation and is specifically designed to go after people who kill while drinking and driving.

The difference is 10 years in prison for each charge. Wellons now faces up to 20 years in each case.

It all stems from that terrible June accident near the Valley View exit in Roanoke that involved five vehicles in all.

Friday, Wellons admitted the evidence would show he forced one big rig off the northbound lanes and into southbound traffic where that rig slammed into the cab of a second tractor trailer - killing both drivers.

An autopsy shows one of those men did not die instantly but rather died as a result of burning to death.

Wellons also pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency room nurse that was trying to treat him -  an assault that took three people to stop.

He also pleaded guilty to DUI.

Those charges are misdemeanors that both carry up to an additional year in jail.

Wellons will be sentenced  November 13.

Roanoke, VA - Timothy Wellons entered a partial plea agreement Friday by pleading guilty to two counts statutory aggravated involuntary manslaughter.

He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery because prosecutors say he attacked a nurse at the hospital after the accident.

Wellons also pleaded guilty to DUI.

He faces two to 42 years in prison.

There will be a sentencing hearing on November 13 at 2 p.m.

Roanoke, VA - The man accused of killing two truck drivers in a fiery wreck on I-581 in Roanoke in June is expected to appear in court this afternoon.

According to the courts website, Timothy Wellons is set to enter a guilty plea at 12:30 p.m. in Roanoke Circuit Court.

At a bond hearing in July, prosecutors presented evidence that showed shortly after the crash, Walloons' blood alcohol content was between 0.34 and 0.38, which is more than four times the legal limit.

Wellons is facing multiple charges including two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
