Bedford Co. Festival Raising Money for Native American Children

Bedford Co., VA – The Distant Drums Music Fest will raise money for Native American children living on a South Dakota reservation.

Eleven acts will take the Sedalia Center stage starting at noon Saturday.

The children who attend the Red Cloud Indian School on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation live in some of the worst poverty in the United States.

Festival Organizer Michael Mehaffey said the children have been on his mind ever since ABC's Diane Sawyer told their story two years ago on 20/20.

"Most of them don't have electricity, running water, bathrooms," said Mehaffey. "A lot of the families sleep on a dirt floor. No heating in a lot of them."

They'll also collect winter coats, hats, gloves, and blankets for the children. Because of the lack of health care facilities, these items should be new to avoid the spread of germs.

Tickets are $12 at the gate for adults. Children 12 and under get in free. The Sedalia Center is located on Sedalia School Road in Big Island.
