Expulsions, Suspensions Down at Pittsylvania Co. Schools

Pittsylvania Co., VA - Expulsions and suspensions are down in Pittsylvania County Schools.

Expulsions reached their highest peak in 2009 at 58. Then, the numbers dropped by roughly 50%.

The school system has also seen suspensions drop by more than a thousand from a decade ago.

Superintendent James McDaniel says higher expectations for student behavior and cooperation from parents led to the decline. McDaniel also says behavior agreements have been put in place for students with chronic behavior issues.

"That is a binding agreement that the student signs, along with the parent and myself and the principal of the school - with very specific expectations designed for that student's needs," said McDaniel.

McDaniel says he's happy about the numbers since students learn better when they're actually in school.
