Fire Officials Tout First Response Technology in a Post 9/11 World

Lynchburg, VA - In a post 9/11 world, a lot has changed for first responders. In particular some savvy technology to make sure they can do their jobs as safely as possible.

Since, fire officials even in Lynchburg are saying technology, like the National Instant Management System, has helped smooth their operations, by mainstreaming communication, so in the event of a major catastrophe, different agencies can all be aware of what's going on.

Also, every Lynchburg fire chief and captain carries an iPhone with apps like drop-box that can notify them of a building's specifics like size and layout before they even arrive. And iPads are now in every rescue vehicle to take pictures, and help communication between EMTs and ER doctors.

"We still fight fire the same way. There's been emerging of new equipment and then some new technologies, but still we have to pack up in our gear and go in and put the fire out or take care of the sick patient" said Battalion Chief Robert Lipscomb with the Lynchburg Fire Department.

Lipscomb says emphasis for firefighters post 9/11, has shifted to gaining as much information as possible before running right into a burning building.
