Bedford Native Sends Out Updates While Under Lockdown at D.C. Navy Yard

Posted:

Washington, D.C. – Bedford native Fred Pollard spent Monday locked down inside his work building at the Washington Navy Yard, but updated friends back home about the unfolding situation through Facebook.

Here are a collection of Pollard's posts:

11:30 a.m.:

"I work here on the Navy Yard. This place is a mess. The shooter is on the other side of base. We are hearing 4 dead 6 others hurt. Our office is safe for now and we are sheltered in place."

12:30 p.m.:

"They sent a very large number of people from building 196 to our building on the other side of base. Police and helicopters everywhere. FBI handling the scene here."

1:30 p.m.:

"We feel as if we are all hostages right now."

2:15 p.m.:

"The latest update is that the FBI is in charge on the ground. They are in building 197 going room by room, floor by floor. They have upped the total deceased. Not sure of the count right now. The FBI is in our building doing interviews."

2:25 p.m.:

"They are doing the searches and still looking for two other shooters. I think the snack machines are empty and the coke machines are running close to empty."

4:45 p.m.

"We understand that some people are being released however the FBI is doing a controlled release. We are on the other side of base and probably will not be released for another couple of hours. The count is now up to 13 including the shooter. The wounded/hurt count has not been released at this time."

4:50 p.m.

"I want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers. This is a sad place tonight. I have talked with people who were in the building. These are the people I ride METRO with in the mornings. Please keep all the people in your prayers."

Pollard was getting his information from the Navy captain in charge on his building, who was trying to keep workers informed over a public address system.
