Lynchburg - This is Richmond week for the Liberty Flames. The Flames go up against their former coach Danny Rocco, now in his second year guiding the Spiders.
Richmond routed VMI 34-0 in its opener before losing in the final seconds at N.C. State, then getting upset last week at Gardner-Webb 12-10. The Spiders at 1-and-2 are still ranked 20th in the nation in the FCS Coaches Poll. That's a great opportunity for LU to beat a top-20 team on the road. And then there is the ROCCO twist, Flames players admit it does make the game more personal.
Desmond Rice, FLAMES JUNIOR RUNNING BACK, said "He recruited a lot of guys that are still on this team and we played for him. And we all still love and respect him, but I mean it's a personal game. We definitely want to go and get that victory but we want to get every victory, so."
Josh Woodrum, FLAMES R-SOPH. QUARTERBACK, said "I personally don't hold anything against Coach Rocco. You know he's the one who got me here and really gave me the opportunity to be in the place that I am right now, so I tip my hat to him, I've got to thank him for that."
Scott Hyland, FLAMES SENIOR LINEBACKER, said "You respect each other and there's definitely a relationship there. But you know for that 60 minutes, you know, we're there to get a win."
