Martinsville Residents Participate in Day To Serve

Posted:

Martinsville, VA - Dozens of Martinsville residents hit the streets on Saturday morning to help clean up their area.

It was all part of the city's Day to Serve, which is an initiative to improve neighborhoods through community service projects.

Volunteers gathered at churches around the city, and walked up and down the streets, picking up litter. They said it's a way to show pride in their community.

"As a prosecutor, we get to see people in the court room for doing exactly this, littering, it makes our community look awful and it smell awful," said Joan Ziglar, Martinsville City Commonwealth's Attorney.

"One of my pet peeves is trash and littering, so I felt like God said do something if it's your pet peeve," said Debby Watlington, a volunteer.

Day to Serve projects began last year when Governor Bob McDonnell proclaimed the last two weeks in September be used to strengthen communities statewide.
