StarTek Move Causes Concern for Some

Lynchburg, VA - StarTek is gearing up to move into their new building in the county in about a week, which is creating a bit of anxiety for some employees who say without bus service, they won't be able to get to work.

Campbell County Economic Developer Mike Davidson says GLTC is crunching the numbers to see how much it would cost to shuttle StarTek employees back and forth.

"I have had conversations with GLTC. We are exploring to see if there are any opportunities to provide some type of a shuttle service," Davidson said. "Typically, counties don't provide mass transit. The reason that we don't is because counties are generally much larger in area."

The new location is set to open this October. It is located about nine miles from its current location in the Plaza Shopping Center on Lakeside Drive in Lynchburg.

"When you figure a bus, fuel, transportation cost, you can go anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 and I'm not sure that would be a wise investment," Davidson said.

Donna Anderson uses the bus system to get around.

"I think that's really a shame," Anderson said.

Although Anderson is not a StarTek employee, she commutes her fair share from Lynchburg to Campbell County.

"I understand their point of view," Anderson said. "From Campbell County it's a long way and so they need that transportation."

StarTek is expanding. Employees say they are currently in the process of hiring 300 additional employees to assist in a new line of business, although they could not elaborate more than the expansion.

The Board of Supervisors is also giving the company $55,000 in the form of an industrial incentive to be used to purchase a generator.
