Pay Parking Station Added In Lynchburg

Lynchburg, VA - A fourth pay to park station is now in operation behind Sun Trust Bank on Main Street.

The pay to park lot is open on a trial for 90 days.

The city is not responsible for the parking deck, it's private. The city of Lynchburg only owns and controls 25% of parking downtown.

Pauline Hicks goes downtown a few times a week, but on Tuesday, something was different.

"They should have a better situation than that," Hicks said. "I think it's horrible."

The parking deck has a slot for credit cards, a slot for coins, but nowhere to put your dollar bills.

Hicks says it's been a bit of a hassle.

"Rarely [do] I carry change," Hicks said.

Private company 1001 Commerce Street, LLC gets all the money from the parking fees to use as it pleases.

According to City Parking Manager Norman Hale, the city enforces the deck, collecting money from parking tickets.

"That fund is used to make any kind of improvements to support the parking program and operations in the downtown area," Hale said.

The city has nothing to do with the management, purchase or contract of the deck.

"I'm glad to see that private operators are beginning to regulate their parking and manage it in some fashion," Hale said.

Hale says private decks create more parking for people coming downtown to shop or do business.
