Danville Remembers 110th Anniversary of the Wreck of the Old 97

Danville, VA - This weekend marked the 110th anniversary of a deadly train wreck in Danville, and hundreds came out to pay tribute to those who died.

The train was called the Old 97, and when it wrecked in 1903, it killed eleven people and injured several more.

A group of model train enthusiasts set up an exhibit at the Danville Science Center called Rail Days, to remember the wreck

They've brought Rail Days to Danville for the past ten years, but this weekend was their biggest turn out ever.

The group says over 500 people stopped by.

"It's a significant event in Danville's history. It's a means of getting together and doing something as a family, especially for the kids who like to see trains run," said Coordinator John Wallace.

The group says it took them six hours to set up the exhibit.
