Three People Killed in Fiery Crash on I-81 in Smyth Co.

WYTHEVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police are investigating a fiery three-vehicle accident that killed three people on Interstate 81 in Smyth County.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says a tanker truck hauling gasoline overturned when the driver swerved and the 8,500-gallon load shifted. The truck slid into a pickup truck, exploded and then hit a highway crash cushion truck. All three vehicles caught fire.

Geller says the pickup truck and the crash cushion truck were traveling south together when the accident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.  Geller says the tanker truck's driver, 48-year-old Frank A. Skeens Jr. of Lebanon, and the pickup's driver, 30-year-old Trevor Blankenship of Lebanon, died at the scene.

The other truck's driver died while being taken to a hospital. His name hasn't been released, pending notification of relatives.
