Passionate Pierogy Lovers Celebrate with Mrs. T's®
SHENANDOAH, Pa., Oct. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The day that pierogy lovers across America wait for each year is finally here! The fifth annual National Pierogy Day reminds consumers from deep in the Pierogy Pocket all the way out to the West Coast to celebrate the perfect pairing of pasta and potatoes. What is a pierogy, you ask? Well, they are smile-shaped pasta pockets filled with deliciously whipped potatoes combined with ingredients like onion, Cheddar cheese and even jalapeno. And every October, America takes a moment to savor the rich history and flavorful traditions of one of the country's most treasured and tasty comfort foods.
The pierogy first made its debut in the U.S. at the beginning of the 20th century, arriving from Eastern Europe. By the early 1950's, pierogies had become immensely popular among Americans of all ethnicities – they were clearly here to stay.
Ted Twardzik, Sr., founder of Mrs. T's Pierogies, saw this popularity as an opportunity. For years, his mother Mary (the actual Mrs. T) and her friends, would gather around the kitchen table and make pierogies for their church. He suspected that if these comfort food favorites did so well at church dinners, they would surely be a hit at his local grocery store. So on October 8, 1952, Twardzik produced the very first samples of Mrs. T's Pierogies and delivered them to a local grocery store in Shenandoah, PA. And the rest, as they say, is history.
"When people ask me what I do, and I tell them I make pierogies, they just smile and tell me how much they love them," said Tom Twardzik, President, Mrs. T's Pierogies. "National Pierogy Day is not only a day to celebrate the pierogy, it's a reminder that pierogies are great to enjoy any day of the year."
Mrs. T's, still a family-owned company, is the largest producer of frozen pierogies in the country. From finger foods to main dishes, Mrs. T's Pierogies are perfect for any and every occasion – whether it's game day, the premiere of your favorite TV show or just a casual weeknight get-together. And with 14 different varieties, including whole grain, there are plenty of options from which to choose.
So this National Pierogy Day, enjoy a plate of Mrs. T's Pierogies with your closest friends because, after all, this historical culinary treat turned mainstream meal staple was meant to be shared.
