Government Shutdown Bad for Local Business

Posted:

Bedford, VA – Bedford small business owners are feeling the impact of the government shutdown.

There's concern fewer people will travel the parkway to see the leaves this year, since many parkway facilities are closed.  The Peaks of Otter Lodge closed last week.

The next two weeks are typically the busiest all year for Liberty Station restaurant in Bedford. The restaurant won't be able to recoup lost profits.

"You don't eat twice today because you didn't get to eat yesterday," said Harry Leist, owner of Liberty Station. "Yesterday's gone."

It's also peak season at Johnson's Orchard and Peaks of Otter Winery.

"It's the worst time of the year that it could have happened," said Danny Johnson, orchard and winery owner. "It's the fall.  The leaf lookers are traveling, and they buy a lot of stuff."

Since Johnson ships wine out of state, he must get federal government approval for some new wine formulas. The application for his new cherry chocolate wine is sitting on a desk in Washington. He hoped to start making it this fall.
