Lynchburg Family Gets Home Remodel

Lynchburg, VA-  A Lynchburg family is getting some much needed help with their home,  all thanks to a group of good Samaritans.

The group is called "Rebuilding Together Lynchburg," and is part of a national nonprofit that works to help home-owners with repairs they can't afford on their own.

This is one of over 300 homes this group has remodeled just within the past 10 years.

The home belongs to Laura Dewitt. She lives there with her sister and her sister's three children, and says she couldn't be happier with the help and kindness she has been shown.

"We found that rather than going somewhere for a week with an adult mission trip, we could stay here and work and get a lot of good things done for good people, we can be the hands of God and live in the calling we see- just by making things better in our community, " said Rev. Bill Bumgarmer of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Volunteers from St. Paul's Episcopal Church are some of the many that will help fix Laura Dewitt's home this week. Dewitt has lived in the area her entire life.

Over the years, her home has deteriorated. She and her family applied for a remodel with "Rebuilding Together Lynchburg", and within a month, found out they were approved.

"We broke down in tears, it was exciting- for someone to do things like that for us," said Dewitt.

Students, churches, contractors, and organizations from all over the Hill City have joined together to fix this house.

"It's a community effort, it really is. It's exciting to be a part of," said Bumgarmer.

Because of a leaky roof, many parts of Dewitt's home have been damaged.

Her sister and their children even had to share a room to avoid the leak.

Now the home will get a new roof, new landscaping, fresh coats of paint, a completely redone kitchen, and new floors and ceilings.

Dewitt said she looks forward to it being finished and comfortable.

"It's really a moving experience. You're a different person after you do things like this," said Bumgarmer.
