Lawsuit against hair-straightening product

Products infused with keratin have been a growing trend, as women try to obtain sleek, smooth hair.  The market has been flooded with products over the past year or so.  Now, one of those products is in the middle of a class action lawsuit.  Women across the United States are suing the maker of a popular hair smoothing product.  "Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Smoothing Kit" is the named culprit.  The unsatisfied customers in the suit claim the kit burned their scalps and caused permanent hair loss.

Two women at the center of the case say their hair was melted.  Two years later, they say they still have visible bald spots.

The suit also alleges false advertising for promoting the product as "formaldehyde-free."  The smoothing kit contained DMDM hydantoin, a chemical that releases formaldehyde.

Unilever says the product was discontinued last year and the company is taking the claims seriously.  More than 380,000 units have been recalled since May 2012.  However, the lawsuit claims the company still didn't do enough to warn customers.

    Police in Gadsden are trying to return hundreds of stolen items to their rightful owners. Captain Paul Cody said officers bust a large fencing operation this week. Joe Pearl, 75, is the suspect in the case. It took a long time to sort through and document a very wide range of stolen property. "We've collected a lot of stuff," Cody said. "Toilet paper. We have non-firearms related weapons, we have karaoke machines, musical instruments, car stereos, underwear."

    Investigators in Gadsden said a man strangled his ex-girlfriend Tuesday evening before stabbing another man to death. Officers arrested 30-year-old William D'Angelo McKinney Wednesday night. He faces charges for murder and domestic violence with strangulation. Police said McKinney went to his ex-girlfriend's home in the Mill Village area and let himself in. Investigators said she asked him to leave, but he shoved her and then put her in a headlock until she blacked out.
