Lawsuit against hair-straightening product

Posted: Updated:

Products infused with keratin have been a growing trend, as women try to obtain sleek, smooth hair.  The market has been flooded with products over the past year or so.  Now, one of those products is in the middle of a class action lawsuit.  Women across the United States are suing the maker of a popular hair smoothing product.  "Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Smoothing Kit" is the named culprit.  The unsatisfied customers in the suit claim the kit burned their scalps and caused permanent hair loss.

Two women at the center of the case say their hair was melted.  Two years later, they say they still have visible bald spots.

The suit also alleges false advertising for promoting the product as "formaldehyde-free."  The smoothing kit contained DMDM hydantoin, a chemical that releases formaldehyde.

Unilever says the product was discontinued last year and the company is taking the claims seriously.  More than 380,000 units have been recalled since May 2012.  However, the lawsuit claims the company still didn't do enough to warn customers.
