Appomattox Skating Rink Closes Its Doors

Appomattox, VA - A.J. Skate World in Appomattox closed its doors Sunday.

The owner of the building has been trying to sell it for a while and has finally found a buyer. The Wilkerson family, who ran Skate World, rented the building and found out Friday afternoon that today would be their last day of business.

They ran the skating rink for almost a year and say they will miss it. Many came out for one last skate and there was even one final birthday party.

Parents said they will miss the safe and fun environment the rink provided for their kids.

Despite the sadness, the family is keeping a positive outlook.

"Our whole focus has been this community and our whole focus will end with our community. So whatever this leads to, I hope it is a positive impact on this community- they are wonderful. The kids have been my life this year along with everybody else who's been involved," said Jennifer Wilkerson, who ran A.J. Skateworld with her family.

The buyer of the building comes from Northern Virginia; his plans for the building are still unknown.
