Appomattox Co. Church Cleaning Up Vandalism Damage, Officials Investigating

Update 4 p.m.:

Appomattox Co., VA - The Appomattox County Sheriff's Office is investigating a vandalism at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church that they believe happened overnight or early Sunday morning.

Sheriff Barry Letterman says they got a call around 7:15 a.m. about a break-in at the church off Oakleigh Avenue.

In the afternoon, members of the parish were there trying to clean up the mess.

Sheriff Letterman says they believe the person acted alone, breaking into the parish through a window and leaving a lot of damage.

Outside, a statue was knocked off, handicapped signs were broken, and pumpkins were smashed all over the ground.

But most of the damage was inside. Six windows were broken, including three stained-glass windows.

Members of the church say parts of the altar were spread all over the place.

They say they were in shock when they came to mass Sunday morning, but now, they're focusing on repairing and securing the church.

"We were and still are stunned. Just how could anyone do this to a church? But God is in here, so we're going to let His light shine, and we're going to go on," said Bonnie Toth.

"In the end, we're going to come up on top. We're a closed-knit church, and we're not afraid to do some sweat equity to keep the church going," said Charles Haney, the church's bookkeeper.

Fortunately, nothing was stolen from the church.

The Sheriff's Office says they have developed a suspect in the case, but they are still investigating. If you have any information, they ask that you call 434-660-8744.
