Mommy Monday: How to Cut Costs While Raising a Child

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's annual report shows the cost of raising a child from birth to age 17. This year's total was $241,080.

The figure does not include the costs of pregnancy or college.

Some 78% of the cost is spent on housing, child care, education, food, and transportation.

There are a number of ways for parents to cut the cost. First, by your own house if you can. Remember, cutting down one bedroom can save you $400 a month.

With child care and education, half of the families who responded reported no costs because they used family members to watch their kids, a savings of $4000 a year.

Americans spend almost $40,000 on food. By cutting back on going out, buying generic brands, and using coupons you can cut costs.

The fourth cost was transportation. Buying a car just a year old can cut the price by 20% on average. Keeping up the maintenance of your car can help save on gas costs, too.
