Meet the Candidates Who Want to Replace Putney

Bedford Co., VA - When Delegate Lacey Putney announced his retirement after more than 50 years in the General Assembly, it cleared the way for two new names on the ballot Tuesday in the 19th district.

Republican Terry Austin is a lifelong resident of Botetourt County. He's currently a county supervisor and is a former member of the planning commission.

Austin thinks his local experience will serve him well in Richmond, because he's seen the impact of state government on localities.

"The unifying factor is economic development and education", said Austin. "People want a quality education for their child. They want affordable tuition going forward and they want good jobs. They want their children to be able to stay in this area."

Democrat Lewis Medlin ran against Putney last time. Medlin moved to the area in 1975. He currently lives in the Stewartsville area and owns a business is in Montvale.

Medlin has authored or co-authored 11 United States patents and wants to help small business grow.

"The big thing I'm running on is Virginia First. Right now the state of Virginia spends about $32 billion a year on goods and services," said Medlin. "Believe it or not we don't have anything saying they should buy from companies in the state of Virginia."

The 19th district covers parts of Alleghany, Botetourt, and Bedford Counties. Both candidates say they would push for the completion of the Route 220 road improvement project.
