Update: Dunbar Sends Students Home Early, Power Restored to Some Businesses

Update 12:20 p.m.:

Lynchburg, VA - Dunbar Middle School dismissed its students Thursday after the power outage in Lynchburg. Power was restored late in the morning, but school officials had already made the decision to send students home at noon.

Power has also been restored to R.S. Payne. Classes will continue as scheduled.

Some downtown Lynchburg businesses also say their power has been restored.

Update 10:45 a.m.:

Lynchburg, VA - Nearly 1,000 homes and businesses lost power around 6:30 a.m. Thursday after a vehicle plowed into a power pole on the Concord Turnpike.

The power outage has affected two Lynchburg City Schools - Dunbar Middle and R.S. Payne Elementary. Right now, a school spokesperson says the school day is continuing as usual, but administrators are working with AEP workers to determine how to move forward.

ABC 13 News has contacted downtown radio stations. They confirm five channels in the Bank of the James building lost power, some are transmitting signals over different frequencies.

ABC 13 News is also following up with downtown businesses that were impacted by this outage.

AEP says so far there's no timeline for when power will be restored, but it should be some time Thursday.

Lynchburg, VA - Dispatchers have confirmed that a vehicle hit a utility pole on the Concord Turnpike Thursday morning, causing a power outage in the area.

According to Appalachian Power, the outage affects more than 900 people.  The outage also includes downtown Lynchburg.  Traffic lights are out.
