Bedford Co., VA – The mother of a Bedford County teen who died suddenly last April is remembering her daughter by making a life-saving donation to the Montvale Fire Department.

Jessica Hart, 17, became unresponsive on her way home from a doctor's visit April 4. The medical examiner concluded Hart died from complications of mononucleosis.

A nurse and doctor who treated Hart at a Roanoke County urgent care facility both face disciplinary action by state boards.  They charges against them claim they gave the girl a shot of a powerful painkiller known to cause respiratory depression.

Neesey Alt, Hart's mother, has attended fire department fundraisers in the months following her daughter's death. Alt collected more than half the cost of a $7,000 defibrillator monitor for the fire department. The first $1,000 came from Hart's own savings account. The teen had been saving the money to buy a truck.

"We'd like to save lives in Jessica's name," said Chief Scott Hawkins. "When we take it out and use it, we'll think of her."

Chief Hawkins responded to the 911 call made by Hart's mother. Hawkins did not know Hart had hopes of someday joining the fire department.
