D-Day Memorial to Honor Slaughter With Bust

Bedford, VA – The National D-Day Memorial has announced plans to honor founder Bob Slaughter with a bust.

The memorial has started fundraising for the $100,000 bust and accompanying plaque to tell Slaughter's story.

April Cheek-Messier, National D-Day Memorial Foundation President, announced the campaign during the memorial's Veterans Day ceremony Monday.

"This was his vision. We're here today because of the vision he had so many years ago," said April Cheek-Messier, D-Day Memorial President. "I know that he is smiling down on us, just very excited that we're continuing that vision."

Slaughter was a young Army sergeant who fought on Omaha Beach. In his later years the Roanoke native led the effort to bring the national memorial to Bedford.

"That was an Army sergeant. It wasn't some general. It wasn't some admiral. That was an Army sergeant. Look what he did," said Bill King, a veteran and friend of Slaughter. "If you've got the right idea and the right passion for it, you can create miracles and this is nothing but a miracle."

Lynchburg sculptor Richard Pumphrey is working on the bust. It will be dedicated Memorial Day 2014.
