Seeking Shelter From Frigid Cold Temperatures at Lynchburg Salvation Army

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - With temperatures in the teens Wednesday night, shelters like the one at Lynchburg's Salvation Army were in full swing.

Folks file in from the frigid cold. For a night or two, the shelter is their warm place to sleep.

"It got so cold, I couldn't stand it, I had to have some help" said Kevin Mayhew.

With nowhere else to go, and with temperatures plummeting, Mayhew turned to the Salvation Army.

"I feel sorry for people that have to stay out there. The staff here is great, you get two meals a day, which is great, and you're very blessed to be here" he said.

Mayhew is one of hundreds who will reap the benefits of the Salvation Army shelter this year.

"We have a few cots laying around that we pull out" said Jamie Warrick.

Warrick oversees the Center of Hope, shelter, food service, and residence program.

"Lots of children, our family units have been full for the past six, seven months now, yeah, that's very hard, but that's the reason we're here" she said.

Over the course of these colder months, the Salvation Army will distribute more than 2,000 coats, many to children.

"They just need a little extra warmth, then we have blankets that we can give out to them" said Warrick.

More than 200 of these emergency blankets; all to grateful men and women, all looking to escape the cold.

"Since I've been down here, this has been a true blessing with the people here" said Mayhew.

The Salvation Army will be taking coat donations throughout these cold months. You can donate at Burlington Coat Factory on Wards Road, any Lynchburg YMCA location, or at the Salvation Army itself, on Park Avenue.

You can also support their local relief efforts this winter through the Red Kettle campaign this holiday season. It officially kicks off on Friday.
