Serving Hope Food Pantry Accepting Donations for the Holidays

Posted:

South Boston, VA - Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away and one South Boston pantry is asking the public to help them fill their shelves.

Serving Hope Food Pantry is giving lots of people a helping hand this year. Workers have been working hard fundraising and collecting food for families who are less fortunate.

The group will be handing out Thanksgiving food boxes Monday, but say they still need donations to keep rolling in.

Serving Hope Food Pantry in South Boston has been in operation for almost two years. They serve a little "hope" once a month to families who are struggling to make ends meet.

"We have a lot of people that don't get assistance, they work and they live form pay check to pay check and they pay the bills and have nothing left, so they still need food and there are people that do get some assistance and it's not enough and so they come as well," Cindy Cole, Coordinator of Serving Hope Food Pantry said.

The pantry helps around 115 families every month, and they rely on donations to keep the pantry stocked.

"We couldn't do this without the community," Bonita Nelson said.

Now that the holidays have rolled around, the need is even greater. They'll be handing out these Thanksgiving food boxes on Monday.

"It's going to busy because last holiday was really busy," Volunteer Steven Lloyd.

"'We are prepared for probably 115 [people], Cole said.

"The room is stocked now, but after tomorrow, it'll be a total different picture, we'll start from scratch," Lloyd said.

"For Christmas and Thanksgiving we try to do gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, yams," Cole said.

The pantry says they get a lot of donations of vegetables. Shelves remain rather bare however, and the pantry says they're in need of items like cereal, peanut butter and fruit.

"A lot of people are really grateful and they thank us and thank us and thank us and really appreciate everything that we do, and they leave a little bit happier than when they came in," Lloyd said.

"We count it an honor and privilege to give our time to volunteer to help the ones in need," Volunteer James Throckmorton said.

Once Serving Hope gives away the Thanksgiving food to those in need Thursday, they'll be starting from scratch trying providing food for families on Christmas day.
