Ringgold Woman Credits LHOV For Saving Her Life

Pittsylvania Co., VA - A Living in the Heart of Virginia episode may have saved the life of a Ringgold woman. It prompted her to get tested for thyroid cancer and her doctor found something.

Sitting in her living room chair, Susan Wilkerson heard words that will forever change her life.

"I believe that God led me to see that and that its all just worked out like it is supposed to," said Wilkerson.
Wilkerson doesn't normally watch TV in the middle of the day. But a sick husband and a lunch break brought her home to see ABC 13's Living in the Heart of Virginia.

"He said 'Here, let's watch this about thyroids,'" said Wilkerson.

The segment featured Dr. Mack Harrell who explained how to self-examine for thyroid abnormalities.

"Take a glass of water, take a sip, tilt your head back, look in the mirror and look for something below the Adam's Apple and above the collar bone moving," said Harrell.

Wilkerson did a quick check.

"I did tilt my head back and felt and the right side was much bigger than the left," said Wilkerson.

The lump in her neck opened her eyes.

"There are some things that, the more you know, the better off you are.  And I think health is one of those things," said Wilkerson.

She went to the doctor. A few tests later, Wilkerson found out she has a large nodule on the right side and many small ones on the left.

"I found out Friday that it is highly suspicious for follicular thyroid cancer," said Wilkerson.

Later this month, Wilkerson will go in for a follow-up and then likely surgery. She won't find out until then if the lump is cancerous, but she does know one thing.

"That segment may have saved my life," said Wilkerson.

Wilkerson hopes that everyone will go to a mirror and check themselves for thyroid abnormalities after reading this, and maybe this story will save someone as well.
