Hampden-Sydney Opens Football Playoffs Saturday

Hampden-Sydney - Hampden-Sydney opens NCAA playoff action Saturday at noon at home against Maryville.

The Tigers won last week's ODAC title game in thrilling fashion, stopping a game-tying two-point try in the final two minutes to win 28-26 at arch-rival Randolph-Macon.

Marty Favret, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY HEAD COACH, said "To win in that fashion at their place and, you know, every ODAC championship is so sweet.  My first one was cool in '07 but this was really special."

One-time Brookville receiver Holton Walker is one of the Tigers' biggest weapons on offense. He's the ODAC's leading receiver by a long shot with 87 catches, hoping for more against Maryville's defense.

Holton Walker, TIGERS JUNIOR RECEIVER (87 CATCHES), said "You know they're very sound, they don't blitz much.  They've got two pretty good corners, got a really good freshman safety. They're very sound, similar to like a W&L team."

Marty Favret said "Averaging 40 points a game.  Beat a good Christopher Newport team which we weren't able to do so we've got our hands full.  But you know it's playoff time, there's no cupcakes left."

With the playoffs comes pressure, but Favret says the Tigers need to relax and have fun. Walker knows what the offense needs to do.

Holton Walker said "Not turn the ball over.  We've got to complete the short-game passes and make big plays when we need it."

The last time these teams met was 10 years ago when Hampden-Sydney routed the Scots 82-14.

Marty Favret said "The head coach's wife was screaming at me after the game, she was right over there.  But they came in a little beat up and we were really good.  And it was 56-to-something at half and then it got a little bit out of hand.  So don't think we're gonna see that score Saturday."
