Protecting the People That Protect Us

Richmond, VA - Police officers protect us every day. Thursday in Richmond, however, all the discussion was on how to protect them.

Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown on behalf of the Safe Surfin' Foundation and Moose International presented ballistic vests, bullet proof vests, to six Virginia Law Enforcement Agencies at the State Capitol in Richmond. They're calling the program Protecting the Protectors.

"When I started, I didn't have a vest," said Sheriff Mike Brown.

That was 47 years ago. Sheriff Mike Brown was startled when he learned a recent statistic.

The 236,000 officers across America are out there every day, without a vest.

"That's not officers who have a vest and go to work and don't wear them. They said this was they don't have them," said Brown.

"They get hand-me-downs sometimes. This one's custom fitted for them," said Lt. Danny Brabham of the Rocky Mount Police Department.

Bradham is taking three vests home to officers.

Locally Central Virginia Community College officers will be wearing new vests as well.

Dr. John Capps is the college president.

"It's crucial. There's nothing that's more important . Teachers can't teach and students can't learn unless they feel safe," Capps said.

That feeling of safety begins with knowing the officers protecting them are covered.

"Thirty-three vests were presented at that ceremony. There was a big surprise announcement from the attorney general's office," said Capps.
