Eddie Scores 24 in Tech's OT Win at Miami


CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Jarell Eddie scored 24 points to lead Virginia Tech to a 61-60 overtime victory against Miami in the opening ACC game for both teams on Sunday.

   Eddie hit a jumper with 19 seconds remaining in overtime to break a 59-59 tie for the Hokies (7-3). Garrius Adams converted the first of two free throws for the Hurricanes (5-5) with seven seconds left but missed the second.

   Eddie's corner 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining in regulation tied it at 56. Miami had a chance to re-take the lead but Davon Reed's 3-point attempt with 14 seconds left failed to hit the rim and went out of bounds. Virginia Tech's Joey Van Zegeren made a short bank shot with .03 seconds left for the chance to win in regulation, but it was ruled after the buzzer.
   Adams scored 14 points to lead Miami and James Kelly finished with 12.

•Virginia Tech moves to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. This is the earliest in a season that the Hokies have ever won an ACC game (third-earliest game).

•Jarell Eddie tied a career-high with six three-point field goals. This is the third time this season and in his career he has made six three-pointers in a game. The school record for three-point field goals in a game is seven. The six three-pointers is a new ACC high for Eddie.

•Jarell Eddie scored the Hokies’ last 11 points in regulation.

•Jarell Eddie has scored in double figures in all 10 games for the Hokies this season.

•Joey van Zegeren recorded a career-high with 10 rebounds in today’s game. His former high was eight last season against VMI.

•This was the Hokies’ first overtime game of the season. Tech is now 13-5 in ACC overtime games and 2-0 against Miami in ACC overtime games and all overtime games.

•Tech is now 11-13 all-time against the Hurricanes. This is Tech’s first win in the BankUnited Center since an 88-83 overtime win over Miami on Jan. 25, 2009.

•The Hokies will not play again until Saturday, Dec. 21, as they travel to the Richmond Coliseum to face VCU in the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. and will be telecast live on the NBC Sports Network.
