Lynchburg Hillcats Team President's Legacy Remembered

Lynchburg, VA - A legend in the local baseball community has passed away.

Lynchburg Hillcats Team President Rex Angel, 85, died Wednesday due to complications from a fall last week.

This a very emotional time for all involved with the Lynchburg Hillcats. They are currently in Orlando for winter meetings.

General Manager Paul Sunwall says that Angel traveled with them to Florida for the past twenty years. The entire team is very sad to not have him there.

Sunwall says many from the team visited Angel in the hospital before they left, but knew the prognosis did not look good. Sunwwall also said that Angel attended all the Hillcats games and was in and out of the office many times a week, so he will be missed greatly.

"He was a genuine individual who cared about people. He was passionate about not only about his work and his family but also about baseball and what it means to the family to have that type of entertainment for the community," said Sunwall.

Angel was in the original ownership group for the Hillcats dating back to 1965.

Angel's visitation is Sunday at Heritage Funeral Home from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. with the funeral Monday at 1 p.m. at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church.
