Altavista's Mike Scharnus Talks Essex

Lynchburg - The Altavista Colonels play for their first state football title since 2009 and second in school history when they battle the Essex Trojans out of Tappahannock Saturday at noon at Salem Stadium.

Altavista has won 9 in a row, Essex 10 in a row.  Both average better than 41 points a game, the only loss for the Trojans came against larger school James Monroe, who plays Northside for the 3A championship Saturday at noon at Liberty University.

Mike Scharnus, ALTAVISTA HEAD COACH, said "Essex has a lot of speed, that's what impresses me the most.  Lot of speed, defensively they're big up front and their linebackers and defensive backs can run and they like to hit, too, they're very physical.  Offensively they're dangerous with their passing game, lot of speed, quarterback is very, very good, throws the ball very well.  So they're an extremely dangerous team."

Dennis question - "They sound a lot like Altavista.  Do they remind you of your own team a little bit?"

Scharnus said "We might have a little similarities, we might have a little bit.  We do things differently though offensively, probably don't throw the ball as much as they do, but there's some similarities."
