Lynchburg House Damaged in Fire

Update: 10:30 a.m.:

Lynchburg, VA - Crews had to shut down part of Main Street at Florida Avenue in Lynchburg Friday morning as they battled a house fire on Race Street.

A fire department spokesman says the blaze broke out about 6:30 a.m.  When firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.  They worried that someone might be inside.

"Because of the time of day, it would be a time when we would think there would be people inside, so we did make an initial interior tact, and attempt rescue. Fortunately, we did not find anything, and subsequently we were able to determine that the occupant of the home made it out safely," said Lynchburg Battalion Chief Greg Wormser.

Crews have been on the scene for hours, checking for hot spots, and cleaning up the area.  No one was hurt, and no cause has yet been determined.
