Bedford Co., VA - A picture of a horse tied to a telephone pole in Bedford County went viral about two weeks ago, with tens of thousands of shares on social media. People were outraged the horse was out in an ice storm.
Now that horse won't feel the cold nearly as much.
Thunder and the four other horses owned by Tyree Bryant look great in new blankets and halters. Their blankets were sent from all over the country by friends local riding instructor Katie Gardner has made through horse shows. Gardner started an online fundraiser for Bryant's horses.
The money just bought sheds for shelter, ordered delivered and installed, to free up volunteer hands for pasture cleanup and fence building on Bryant's property.
"It was bad at first. I mean really bad. But things turned around. Thanks to God and Katie. Came out and started helping me and turned things around and this has been great, really great," said horse owner Tyree Bryant.
"They're doing really, really well. The horses are just taking everything in stride. They've been awesome to work with," said Gardner.
The sheds will be here in three to six weeks. Tractor Supply in Bedford has discounted fencing material for the project. Southern States Bedford Cooperative has discounted two gates.
They are keeping the fundraising site up a little while longer, to bring in the remainder of what they'll need.
