Danville Area Humane Society Employees Work on Christmas

Danville, VA - While many of us were opening presents Christmas morning, some Danville Area Humane Society employees were opening their doors. That's because even on holidays, the animals still need to be taken care of.

It may be the most wonderful time of the year. But for some dogs and cats, Christmas is just another day. They still need their cages cleaned, they still need their treats.

"Animals need care 7 days a week, 365 days a year," said Lisa Hannaford, Assistant Manager at Danville Area Humane Society.

At the Danville Area Humane Society employees work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to take care of dozens of animals.

"If it wasn't for the animals in this shelter, I wouldn't have a job so giving back to them on this special day kind of brings the season back into focus," said Hannaford.

Normally 4 kennel attendants split up the work. But on this holiday, Hannaford and her daughter will do it all.

"Once our cleaning is done, we get to have a little more time with the animals, which is always special for us as well as them," said Hannaford.

Hannaford says spending Christmas here isn't a chore, rather it allows them to appreciate the true meaning of the season.

"It brings it back down to earth to what it is supposed to be, peace on earth and goodwill to men and animals," said Hannaford.

Because of donations, they can even give the animals an extra toy or treat.

"You can just see the 50 lb. pit bull and the 90 lb. rottweiler just turn into puppies when you throw a toy in their run. That's just the best Christmas gift you could get," said Hannaford.

Hannaford says she and her family start their Christmas after most people have finished. When they go home at 4 p.m. they all open presents and spend that time together.
