All names have been release for those behind the officer-involved shooting that took place in Muskogee Thursday afternoon.

Officials with the Muskogee Police Department stated that the incident happened before 12:30 p.m. near 4th and Elgin when Officer Joe Poffel initiated the traffic stop on a vehicle he believed to be stolen.

MPD Public Information Officer Mike Mahan stated that three people were inside the vehicle at the time. Apparently the police officer knew it was stolen at the time because he had taken the initial theft report.

Poffel escorted the driver, 22-year-old Marvin Green, out of the vehicle and asked another passenger to exit the vehicle as well. 33-year-old Thomas Estes then became involved in a struggle with a backup officer, identified as Wesley Biles, and attempted to take his weapon.

It was then that Officer Poffel fire his weapon and shot Estes.

Estes was transported to a Tulsa area hospital for treatment of his wounds. No other update has been given on his condition.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation, however the district attorney will make the decision on if the shooting was necessary. Both officers are on routine administrative leave.
