Ridgeway Rescue Squad Hits More Road Blocks With Mold Problem

Posted:

Ridgeway, VA - The Ridgeway Volunteer Rescue Squad can't seem to catch a break when it comes to their mold problems.

Their facility has mold in the basement and now they're having trouble coming up with the money to get rid of it.

What was once a training room has become a place of frustration.

President of the Ridgeway Volunteer Rescue Squad Darren Lockridge looks around their basement with one thing on his mind.

"It's disheartening finding all this and seeing the building this way," said Lockridge.

The walls are now gone, and the room is in disarray.

"It's enough to make your stomach sink," said Lockridge.

The mold problem was discovered last year. It was no surprise because the room often flooded. The extent of the damage left many in shock, though.

Estimates for repair hover around the $200,000 mark. Henry County promised $95,000 reimbursed after they finished the project. The squad quickly used up their $80,000 dollar savings.

"We're pretty much depleted of everything now, we don't have any extra money," said Lockridge.

The rescue squad needs cash now to finish construction. Meanwhile, the problems keep getting bigger. The bank says they can't use the building as collateral because it's an environmental hazard.

"When we started seeing the road blocks yeah frustration does not go beyond, that doesn't even begin to describe it," said Lockridge.

Squad members remain hopeful that banks will reconsider when they get exact estimates over next few weeks.

"We think it's all going to work out in the end, it's just taken a long time to do it. Longer than we wanted to," said Lockridge.

The hope is that the bank will give them a loan soon. Then they plan to start construction by next month, and hope to finish by summer.
