Companies Cashing in on the Cold

Lynchburg, VA - The bitter cold isn't all that bad. It means big business for some local companies. On this frigid Friday night we found some of you spending your cash to keep warm.

With temperatures tumbling into the teens, from heating oil to pizza deliveries, companies are cashing in.

Home heating oil companies with hundreds of deliveries. One truck alone, dumping hundreds of gallons on more than 20 trips to area homes.

"We have, sales started picking up once it started getting cold" said Sterling Oil's Vice President, Donna Beeler Hensley.

"We've had a lot of activity here today, people coming in and buying their oil and people on the phones, so a little bit of everything happening here today" she said.

And it's a constant flow of foot traffic at Lynchburg's True Value Hardware. The hot commodity is their heaters.

"We've been very busy and anticipate even being busier this weekend and early next week" said owner, Chuck Overstreet.

Home heaters can cost a pretty penny. This purchase, a no brainer though when temperatures tumble into the teens.

"People don't like to be cold so they've been coming in buying heaters, gas heaters, electric heaters" said Overstreet.

And when it's freezing, Fox's Pizza Den is heating up. During the day Friday, and into the night, one driver will make nearly 40 deliveries.

"People don't want to be out and be in the weather so they do call us for deliveries quite frequently" said David Osborne, the regional manager.

All the businesses are expecting big sales into this weekend and next week as temperatures continue to fall; possibly as low as five degrees come Tuesday morning.
