Community Steps Up To Serve The Homeless

Lynchburg, VA - A local church is helping homeless in our area stay warm. Blue Ridge Community Church put out a Facebook post Saturday saying they wanted to reach out to the homeless with the cold weather approaching.

Within hours, there were piles of bedding and clothing at the doors of the church.

This weekend, the church picked up fifteen people from the Salvation Army who needed a place to stay. This morning they fed them, washed their clothes, and even had some hairstylists in to cut hair.

"We had a big empty building that was heated. And we don't feel like we're doing a while lot, all we're really doing is loving on others. We've watched so many people take the love of Christ and share that with the people that have come here and it's just been amazing," said Joe Byron who coordinated the program.

"The conditions here are perfect. The hospitality has been tremendous. The people are wonderful. They are smiling all the time. Their eyes are sparkling with the joy of what they're doing for us," said Kathryn Flack who is staying at the church.

Nearly ten local restaurants have also pitched in to donate food. Blue Ridge says they will continue housing the homeless until it gets warmer.
