UPDATE: Heating Demand, Wind, Leave Thousands Without Power

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Hundreds of Appalachian Power customers have their power back after scattered outages Tuesday caused by wind and cold weather.

Still, as of 7 p.m. Tuesday, over 1,200 people were without power.

In Amherst County, 316 people remained without power Tuesday evening, but Public Safety Director Gary Roakes said the power in the county should be back by around 9 p.m.

Roakes said the Amherst County outages were a result of a substation going down.

AEP Spokesperson Teresa Hall said high winds along with high demand from heating systems put extra stress on the grid, causing the other outages.

There was no estimated time on when the rest of the outages would be restored, though crews were working nonstop, Hall said.

Lynchburg, VA – Thousands of Appalachian Power customers are in the dark and the cold as high heating demand has put stress on the electrical grid, AEP spokesperson Teresa Hall said.

In Lynchburg City, 1,267 people had lost power as of Tuesday afternoon.

Other outages include: Amherst Co.: 512, Giles Co.: 148, Montgomery Co.: 119, Pulaski Co.: 239, Tazewell Co.,: 543 as of early Tuesday afternoon.

Hall said the outages are a result of high demand from heating units and winds gusting over 35 mph, causing falling branches and trees.

Crews have been in place in expectation for the conditions and outages before the cold air and wind moved in, Hall said, but the system can only take so much stress.

Hall said that while crews are working around the clock to restore the power as fast as possible, there is no set time for when the power will be restored because the demand remains high.

Hall advised to turn off your major appliances if you have lost power, so when the power is restored, it doesn't overload the system again.

You can check the status of outages by going to Appalachian Power's web site.
