VDOT Preparing for Icy Roads

Lynchburg, VA - With freezing rain and ice a possibility in the forecast, travelers could encounter problems during the morning commute.

VDOT says the weather will be a "wait and see" situation for them.

It was too early Thursday to start preparing the roads. The abrasives and other chemicals would be washed away by the rain.

Friday morning, VDOT representatives say crews will be out putting down abrasives on major roadways to make the traction easier for early morning drivers.

With temperatures below freezing and with rain in the forecast, officials say traditional pre-treatment would be ineffective.

The bulk of the work is expected to begin early Friday morning to make sure school buses and commuters can make it safely throughout the region.

"This seems to be one prior to drive time or at drive time so really, that's key to the whole thing. Slow down, pay attention, but again first and foremost, know the conditions before you go," said Paula Jones with VDOT Communications.

The storm system seems to be prime for the slick spots, black ice in particular.

Travelers are advised to be extra careful.

Use caution, you don't know if the roads have been treated or not. Leave extra time and space between you and the car in front of you.
