Community Gardens To Expand in Lynchburg

Lynchburg, VA -The Virginia Department of Health and the Centra Foundation have awarded more than $10,000 to the Lynchburg Area Food Council.

The money will help put community gardens across the Hill City. The gardens will be planted all over the city and will take a lot of community involvement to complete.

"Community is important and there doesn't seem to be enough of that," said John Abell, Professor of Economics at Randolph College.

A few blocks from downtown, a fenced garden has a lot to offer to those living in what's called a "food desert".

There is also an area where fresh produce is not easily grown.

"This looks like cabbage, and some broccoli on that end," Abell said.

Abell built the planters after doing some research on the best design. They have special wire underneath to keep moles out.

Some are higher than others, enabling those who can't bend over well to still plant and harvest the crops.

"There's going to be a whole new round of expansion of the garden. You have this whole half here," Abell said.

The barrels will be cut in half and used as planters to grow more produce. More produce is something Leslie Hoglund says she hopes the new grant will enable many people to have.

"Taking vacant lots and turning them into food plots," Hoglund said.

Hoglund says the average award will be between $500 and $1500 to get the garden going.

"In other urban cittes, this has been a great asset and a great program and people have really rallied around it," Hoglund said.

Not only will the gardens make those who benefit physically healthy, they will also help establish healthy emotional connections as well.

"You're working side by side with your friends and your neighbors, you create that bond and you have conversations," Abell said.

The grants will be distributed in February, and there will be a training seminar in March on how to start the gardens successfully.

If you want to be a part, be sure to fill out your application by January 31.
