Red Cross Assists 857 Fire Victims Over Ten Weeks

Roanoke, VA - The American Red Cross Virginia Mountain Region is staying busy recently responding to nearly 150 fires over the past ten weeks alone.

In doing so the organization has helped more than 850 victims following those fires.

That is nearly 300 more people in need of emergency help than during the same time last year.

At an average of $275 just in financial help, per person, the group has spent $236,000 in that category alone.

"That's a large amount compared to this time last year so people depend on the Red Cross. They rely on our volunteers and we rely on our volunteers and financial donors so we can do this work," said Amy Whittaker with the Red Cross.

Financial assistance isn't where their work stops.  Replacing immediate essentials, like toiletries and clothing, also fits their mission.

The Red Cross also does follow up consultation with advice to help those affected get back on their feet as soon as they can.
