Colleagues Mourn Death of Virginia State Police Sergeant

Posted:

Henry Co., VA-- A very emotional weekend for Virginia State Police and its Henry County division Office 42. Early Saturday morning the force lost one of their own, Sergeant Michael Phillippi.

As for now, the only information police are releasing is that Sergeant Phillippi was driving east on Route 57, near Peverall Lane, around 2 a.m. He ran off the right side of the road and hit a highway sign. He then crossed back over the road and hit an embankment

Police said he was taken to Martinsville Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later. The crash is still under investigation.

Friends and co-workers said Sergeant Phillippi was a highly respected department supervisor.
He spent 42 years of his life serving the public in Henry County, and people said he did so with integrity, and was more of a father figure than a supervisor.

"He would do his job and if he had to get on you he would always walk away with a smile not matter what the situation was, he would always leave with a smile. He's the type of supervisor we would proud to go out there and put our lives on the line for any day," said  Troopers Noah Knight and  Kevin McCabe.

"He thought of us as his family and we thought of him as being kind of like a father figure and a family to us, a guider, he guided us every day. Every day we came to work he guided us," added Trooper Knight.

Phillippi's funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 am at McCabe Memorial Baptist Church in Martinsville.  He will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
