Local blood supply still at emergency levels

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM - AL -

There is still a need for blood donors in Central Alabama.

A spokesman for Life South says the stretch of rainy days that followed last week's cold snap is impacting the blood supply. LifeSouth is in need of emergency donors with Type-O negative, Type-A negative, and Type-B negative blood.  Those specific blood types are needed because fewer people have negative blood types and they can be transfused to people with positive as well. This keeps those types in higher demand and more difficult to get.

"We certainly appreciate the donors who have responded to our call for help, and we ask them to please help spread the word that more donors are needed," J.B. Bowles said.  "Shortages aren't unusual this time of the year, but the rainy cold weather has slowed our recovery. We need the folks who don't donate regularly to please step up and help." Bowles is the vice-president of operations at LifeSouth.

Donors must be 17 or older, or 16 with parental permission, weigh 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is required. Donors will receive a T-shirt from LifeSouth and be entered in the monthly drawings for Playstation 4 console.  For additional information or to find a blood drive, call 888-795-2707.
