Mommy Monday: Gun Violence

Posted:

USA Today reports nearly one child or teen an hour is hurt by a firearm, serious enough to be put in the hospital.

Six percent of the injuries resulted in death.

This is the first study to highlight non-fatal injuries.

Open wounds account for 52% of the most common injuries.

In children under age 10, 75% of hospitalizations were for unintentional injuries.

Researchers say the best advice to get this number down is to follow the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that the safest home for kids and teens is one without guns.

If you do own a weapon, however, make sure it is stored unloaded and locked with the ammunition in another place.

The full report is published in the journal Pediatrics.
