Police: Danville Rate Rape Doubles

Danville, VA - The number of reported rape cases in Danville doubled in 2013 from the year before.

Police say the number doesn't necessarily mean more people were actually raped because many don't get reported.

Police don't know the reason for the increase, but say everyone can benefit from knowing your surroundings.

"It's extremely unfortunate. One is too many, obviously. As long as people do pay attention to their settings and surroundings, they can minimize the likelihood that they will be victimized," said Cpt. Dennis Haley of the Danville Police Department.

Of the 30 reported cases, some are still waiting on lab results to confirm if it was in fact considered a rape.

In several other cases, the victims didn't want to press charges.
